Sussex Kelp Recovery Project

Sussex Kelp Recovery Project

A collaborative website built to showcase one of the UK’s most exciting marine restoration projects.

The Sussex Kelp Recovery Project (SKRP) brings together scientists, conservationists, policymakers, and local sea users to restore vital underwater ecosystems along the Sussex coast. I was brought on to design and develop a website that could communicate the ambition and scope of this work, showcase the latest progress, and encourage public engagement.

Key goals:

  • Raise awareness of the importance of kelp and other essential fish habitats to the Sussex ecosystem.
  • Communicate SKRP’s progress and partnership model.
  • Inspire action—through donations, volunteering, and citizen science.
  • Provide a go-to hub for restoration professionals, funders, and the wider public.

What I did:

  • Platform: Built in Statamic, a flexible and user-friendly CMS perfect for content-rich sites.
  • Content design: Structured around a clear hierarchy and parallax layout to deliver key messages up-front and allow deeper exploration.
  • Performance & accessibility: Fast-loading, responsive, and easy to navigate on all devices.
  • Scalable architecture: Designed with growth in mind—accommodates regular blog updates, research papers, species data, and more.
  • Engagement tools: Integrated newsletter signup, donation prompts, and social sharing to drive participation.

Outcome:

The site launched in early 2023 as the public-facing home of the SKRP. It's now a key part of the project’s outreach efforts—used by the general public, marine researchers, and potential funders alike.
