Dan Kaufmann is a talented illustrator who'd just gone freelance. He had the work, he had the Illustrator files, he had everything except a website that did his illustrations justice.
The brief was simple: make a portfolio site that gets out of the way and lets the work speak for itself. No flashy animations competing with his art, no complicated CMS he'd never update. Just a clean showcase.
This was a "less is more" project. Dan's illustrations are bold and colourful—they don't need a website fighting for attention.
We kept the tech stack deliberately simple. A static site with minimal JavaScript, fast loading times, and an image grid that adapts gracefully to any screen size. The only animation is subtle hover effects that reveal project details without being distracting.
The real work was in the details: making sure images loaded crisp at every size, getting the spacing right so each piece had room to breathe, and ensuring the site felt as considered as Dan's work itself.
Dan's been using the site to win work ever since. It loads fast, looks good on any device, and does exactly what a portfolio should do—show the work and get out of the way.
Sometimes the best projects are the simplest ones.
