Halen

The Challenge

Halen connects people with mental health professionals through 1:1 video sessions. Booking therapy shouldn't feel like booking a dentist appointment—the experience needed to feel warm, supportive, and friction-free.

The Unit handled the design and backend API. We built the React Native app.

Our Approach

Nine months of development, working closely with The Unit's design team. Mental health apps carry extra responsibility—users are often reaching out in difficult moments, and the technology needs to disappear into the background.

The video calling integration was technically complex. Reliable video across different network conditions, graceful handling of interruptions, clear audio—all essential for therapy sessions where connection quality matters. We tested extensively across devices and network conditions.

The booking flow prioritises simplicity. Browse therapists, see availability, book a slot, join the call. Each step is deliberately calm and uncluttered. No unnecessary friction between "I need to talk to someone" and actually talking to someone.

We also built the practitioner side: therapists managing their availability, receiving notifications, conducting sessions. Two apps, essentially, with very different user needs.

The Results

Since launch, Halen has helped thousands of users access mental health support. The app received critical acclaim and consistently high ratings.

It's the kind of project where you feel genuine satisfaction knowing the technology you built is making a real difference to people's wellbeing.
